The COMMON situation is that int is 32 bits and long long is 64 bits. 
Then when would you use long? It's no longer an in-between value, and 
it's no longer even longer than int, if that's how it was used.

And when int is 16 bits, then what's the point of 'short'.

Here's the current set of int types and their typical widths on x86 and ARM:

  char              8
  short            16
  int              32
  long             ??
  long long        64

And when int is 16 bits:

  char              8
  short            ??
  int              16
  long             32
  long long        64

Notice the odd one out in each case...

I think it could have been handled better.
