There are C implementations where "short", "int" and "long" are all 64 bits. There are implementations where they are all 32-bit, as are "char". There are implementations where char is 8 bit, short is 16 bit, int is 24 bit and long is 32 bit. The values you give above are by far the most common choices - but they are not the only ones supported by C. And there /is/ an alternative that handles it differently (mostly "better", IMHO - but not better in every way) - the fixed size types in <stdint.h>.
