It was lower than it is today. But that's a relative statement.

Such esthetic reasons are not really a sound basis for the laws of 
nature. The second law of thermodynamics expresses the fact that nature 
tends toward higher entropy, so it's natural that the universe now would 
have more entropy than earlier. There does not have to be a basis in 
"beauty" or "elegance", which are human perceptions after all. The 
universe does not really care what esthetics mere humans perceive.
