It can only change the value of its local copy thereof, and that local copy disappears when the function returns. If this /had/ been the way you were thinking, it would have betrayed a major misunderstanding. In C, function arguments are *ALWAYS* passed by value, and a C function argument can never be permanently changed solely by a function call. This is just as true of pointer arguments as it is of numeric arguments.
