Why?

This is a REALLY IMPORTANT QUESTION, and it seems to me that it probably 
betrays a fundamental misunderstanding on your point of a vital part of 
C programming.

So: WHY do you think this?

Pretty much, yes: 2> redirects the standard error stream, and an 
unadorned > is shorthand for 1> which redirects the standard output stream.
