The script language was just a quick way of experimenting with different
algorithms until I got something that worked. It doesn't include any
tokenising; it just works with lists of strings, where each string
represents a token. So ("a","+","b") for 'a+b'.
Currently the code is incredibly clunky (and it doesn't work yet), but I
will later have to implement it as very tight, compiled code.

I forgot about #if; another nightmare! That also means there are two
contexts where preprocessed tokens are delivered: to the parser in a
different part of the compiler; and to the handler for #if/#elsif, which
is still inside the preprocessor. Another complication in the data flow.
