I'm only interested in two: * The speed of its generated code * And that gcc is available everywhere and is stable and well-tested When I write portable C code, I would rather not have to stipulate a compiler, so would avoid relying on special features only available in gcc, or depending on attributes and pragmas only available in gcc, or having a successful build conditional on compile options only available with gcc. (Wouldn't it be funny if the slow speed of gcc was simply due to someone forgetting to turn on optimisation when compiling it! As it would mean that those defending its speed because it does X, Y and Z are just speculating, and in reality don't actually know.) -- Bartc
