And the standard made the behavior consistent.
When I fix your typo, changing plus() to plusplus(), the output of
"gcc -E" includes
return i+ ++j;
The preprocessor inserts a space so that the "+" and "++" will be parsed
as distinct tokens.
I believe the description of the preprocessing phases is specifically
designed to permit a conforming compiler to use text as the output of
the preprocessor.
