The sounds more like a bug in the language definition. From what I can glean from the comments here, numeric constants in C are rather sloppily defined by the preprocessor, and it is that rough token that the next stage has to pick the bones out of in order to end up with something that is a legal hex, binary, octal or decimal number, either integer or floating point. The consequences are that "123ABC" isn't "123" followed by "ABC" (a syntax error anyway), but the number "123..." that has the illegal suffix "ABC". "1.2.3" isn't 1.2 followed by .3, but one number with two many decimal points. -- Bartc
