In most cases, at least during early development, you want the program
to stop with a clear indication of the point of failure. You don't want
the problem to be covered up in any way.

(I also see Ian's point that you can make exceptions an integral part of
development and testing. Exceptions could be a convenient way to print
out trace information to a debug log, for example.)

C++ exceptions can be a good thing, and a bad thing, depending on how
they are used. And testing them can be challenging - especially being
sure you test all cases in which they could be thrown. After all,
exceptions are typically thrown only in unusual circumstances, which may
be hard to provoke in testing.

A better solution is simply to know what you are doing and make sure
your arithmetic is correct. Don't "get rid of overflow problems" -
avoid the possibility of the problems occurring by using appropriate
types, scalings, tests, etc., /before/ problems could occur.
