Yes, I know. I've used those faked numbers myself.

One example is Spoofcard:

Another example of a different way to fake it is, especially while on VPN:
Sideline – 2nd Phone Number by Pinger, Inc.

Both are trivial to use by *anyone*, but I'm sure the SMishers have
*better* ways to hide the caller's real location than these two obvious and
free methods which I've personally tested out myself.

NOTE: SPoofcard offered a free test - I didn't check if they still offer
that, but I have done it in the past, and it *does* work - and is perfectly
legal in the USA (as long as the call purpose itself, isn't illegal).
