Yes, HW is a common abbreviation for hardware, as SW for software.
Well, SW is better to avoid to prevent confusion with SW as SouthWest in
compass context.  :-)

I compare it with magnetic compass ( HW compass) in the smartphone,
talked above. As most smartphones used for car GPS navigation do have HW
compass, while only some cars do have their own compass
( in my region it is very rare )
