Here's a test directory's ls listing:

-rw-r--r-- 1 agbaker staff 10240 5 Aug 2015 myfile.dat
Let's break down the columns:
The {d,d,-} in the first column gives us the type of each entry. The "d"
for "." and ".." are for directory entries referring to the "test"
directory itself, and it's parent, respectively. The "-" indicates that
"myfile.dat" is a regular file.
Now, let's make a hard link to "myfile.dat".
Alans-MacBook-Pro:test agbaker$ ln myfile.dat myfile.dat.link
And let's look at the full listing now:
Alans-MacBook-Pro:test agbaker$ ls -la
total 48
drwxr-xr-x 4 agbaker staff 136 22 Apr 18:01 .
drwxr-xr-x@ 123 agbaker staff 4182 22 Apr 15:56 ..
-rw-r--r-- 2 agbaker staff 10240 5 Aug 2015 myfile.dat
-rw-r--r-- 2 agbaker staff 10240 5 Aug 2015 myfile.dat.link
The second column shows the number of hard links to the underlying inode
of each entry. "myfile.data" and "myfile.dat.link" both show "2" because
they are each linked to the same inode. Remove one...

drwxr-xr-x 3 agbaker staff 102 22 Apr 18:03 .
drwxr-xr-x@ 123 agbaker staff 4182 22 Apr 15:56 ..

And you can see the second column for "myfile.dat.link" is now "1".
So the second column is hard links, and "." is the directory we're
looking at, and it has a "3" in its hard link column.
Now add a sub-directory:

drwxr-xr-x 4 agbaker staff 136 22 Apr 18:05 .
drwxr-xr-x@ 123 agbaker staff 4182 22 Apr 15:56 ..

drwxr-xr-x 2 agbaker staff 68 22 Apr 18:05 subdirectory
Note that the number of hard links to "." just rose by one to "4". Why?
Because "subdirectory" contains a ".." entry that is hard linked to "test".
So the OS creates hard links to directories all the time.
