Moreover, pretty much every file system actually uses directory hard links: they just disallow the user from creating them. Every directory created has one hard link in the directory in which it resides, plus it's one "." entry. If you add sub-directories to a directory, each of their ".." entries are hard links to the parent directory. Oh, and FYI: While Mac OS X makes use of hard links in a new and novel way for Time Machine, it too doesn't allow you to create them at the command line: 'Alans-MacBook-Pro:test agbaker$ ls -la total 24 drwxr-xr-x 4 agbaker staff 136 22 Apr 16:29 . drwxr-xr-x@ 123 agbaker staff 4182 22 Apr 15:56 .. -rw-r--r-- 1 agbaker staff 10240 5 Aug 2015 myfile.dat drwxr-xr-x 2 agbaker staff 68 22 Apr 16:29 testlink Alans-MacBook-Pro:test agbaker$ ln testlink testlink2 ln: testlink: Is a directory' So Mac OS X both allows the use of hard links where they are useful... ...AND prevents the user from doing harm with them. You lose. :-)
