No - and I've been thinking about what that means. If I look back and do 
the sums, I think I spent about 12,000 hours in school, being educated 
in, working in, English, my L1. The school spent about 200 hours trying 
to teach me French, my L2. Two points:

1. The ratio here is enormous: 60:1. There is a big difference in the 
resulting incompetence.

2. Two hundred hours is not a big investment. In principle, one could 
attain the same level in any L2 (Ln?) in a few weeks. It would be easier 
if it were the language of the country (for migrants, their destination) 
so one could profit from immersion.

Ergo, language is a secondary consideration. Migrants would be wise to 
choose their destinations for other reasons, then learn the language.

Caveat (tiens ! - related to the 'cave' of posh schoolboys): migrants' 
schooling may be quite different to mine.

You've mentioned five countries there, and my head's reeling. Let's 
simplify things a bit. Sixteen percent of those travelling to the UK in 
small boats are Iranians (reference in my posting yesterday). Iranians 
speak Persian etc.. Yet where do Iranians apply for asylum? Not 
primarily in Persian-speaking countries:

It may well be that employment checks are lax in Britain. I'd expect 
that; it sounds British, in the same spirit as our policemen not 
carrying guns - which I count as a mark of civilisation. But let's see 
the facts.
