Ran support assistant and it found loads of firmware updates but didn't 
report any hardware problems.
I took the back off the laptop and then spun the fan a couple of times and 
it then started spinning on its own.
Weedy looking thing at the end of a long heat sink (at least that was what 
I think it was; was getting hot).

I am now trying out a Tecknet cooler and we shall see how it goes.

The fan still isn't spinning fast enough to be audible.
Not that I recall it ever being audible.

Anyway it is working in a limited way at the moment so I will try and 
track if it is overheating.

Couple of days I will never get back.
