Back in august 1996 I installed Slackware 3.1 on a 486 with an IDE drive.
The purpose of that machine was to be an NFS file server and lpd printer
server for a printer connected to its parallell port. I no longer mount
its NFS exported drive, but I still use it as my printer server. It has
been running 24/7 for almost 20 years now and the same IDE drive is still
running fine. I don't have any UPS so the uptime isn't so impressive, it
reboots almost every year during the summers when there are thunderstorms.

Even if this is only yet another sample of 1 anectdote I still would say
that most HDs running 24/7 get retired because of obsolete capacity
rather than HDD failures.
