The other thing that happens is personal experience and the need for validation. John and BJ claim to have had direct contact with aliens. So when Boyd Bushman holds up a picture and claims that it's a picture of an alien that an alien took and gave to him, then this must be true, because it supports their own experience. When it turns out that Boyd is holding up a picture of a toy that's been on WalMart shelves for quite a while before Boyd revealed that "secret photo", then there's a scramble to make Boyd's claim true ANYWAY -- and that's where conspiracy theories and disinformation hypotheses get invented. When the creator of a fake alien autopsy movie says himself that it was fake, John and BJ cannot accept that as true, and so they will invent a secret cabal that is making him say that.
