I think you should do some reading about what deep inelastic scattering 
means. Google is your friend, and there's always books.

The experimental signature from deep inelastic scattering is what 
determined the internal structure of nucleons, which were called 
variously partons or quarks.

Deep inelastic scattering for ANY internal structure. You have some
