I really don't think so. We do not demand to see a living dinosaur to 
believe that they existed. All that's needed is some distinctive 
signature that indicates that they once did: Stones in the form of bones 
and eggs, footprints in solidified sediment. By your lights, we should 
demand to have something living that correlates to those fossils, so 
that we can tie the cause and effect together definitively. By your 
lights, we should suspect that fossils can be caused by things other 
than dinosaurs until we have this cause and effect solidified. But we 
don't do that, do we? The fossils are all we need to believe in dinosaurs.

With gravitational waves, same thing. Distinctive signature. INFERRED cause.
