Shown by WHAT? The galactic rotation curves?

Remember, John, the mismatch between relativity and the galactic 
rotation curves raises TWO possibilities:
1. The amount of gravitating matter is right as known, and GR is wrong.
2. GR is right, and the amount of gravitating matter is not right as 
known and there's an additional source of that.

So the research goes along BOTH paths to determine which one is right.
But somehow you think that only ONE of them should be considered (number 
1), because somehow you think that you KNOW that this is the only real 
possibility.

But scientists say, well, we really don't know, do we? So we should 
maybe check both.

Not you though.
