My understanding is that it was Einstein's view that the principle of locality held, which means that correlations between two spatially separated physical entities could only be associated with a causal influence from one to the other, which by necessity would then be limited to the speed of light. He considered correlations between two separate objects WITHOUT accounting for that causal connection to be "spooky" and against his firmly-seated intuition. I think the thing Einstein in the end had difficulty with is the idea that the two spatially separated bodies could in fact be not PHYSICALLY separable, and that they are rather ONE physical state.
