Energy is conserved *when conditions for energy conservation* are
met. In particular, this means understanding about the continuous
symmetries related to conserved quantities in physics as addressed
by Noether's theorem. Many good descriptions can be found online.

As the one equation in the informative blog post below states, it
is the *covariant derivative* of the energy-momentum tensor which
equals zero in general relativity.

The covariant derivative differs from the regular derivative; the
former has some "extra terms". That equation involving covariant
derivatives *is* the generalization of the energy and momentum
conservation defined in special relativity and Newtonian physics.

And, as the blog post also says, this has been known for a century.
