We develop a lot of useful negotiating skills. I've found that "How about a buck for the handful?" is one of the better ploys. Smile at the children and scratch the friendly dogs. Be nice, even when you want to yell AT THAT PRICE PLAN ON BEING BURIED WITH IT! A friend liked to say "I'll come back later, perhaps your widow will be more reasonable" but that seemed excessive. >> Some have really nice cases, some have a good power >> supply or motherboard, some have dead drives, but on balance it's a >> useful thing to do if you don't need bleeding-edge hardware. Worst case -- THE MINISTER at the church rummage sale assured me that the musical keyboard worked so I paid him the $100. Fortunately it was only the power supply, which my son replaced with a computer supply he had lying around. If they say "I don't know" it means "No". I assume that if I can't prove it works, it doesn't. > Often, from their viewpoint, it's broke...but only because they > don't know how to blow the cat hair out of the CPU fan or reinstall the > OS or change a few caps. People really don't want to bother with ebay, and I can understand that. Most people just want to get rid of stuff and MAYBE make some money. The annoying ones are the rich people who think that because they paid $100 for a sweater in 1985 and didn't wear it much it should be worth maybe $30 now. See "...being buried with it" above. >>> Your $0.25 Android lesson this week has been: don't buy a locked android >>> device without also getting the passcode. >> >> Are you one of those people who was so careful with his money that he >> could retire at 40? NO overhead, total profit. He wrote good cross-assemblers for single-chip processors, and all the big-name chip manufacturers' salesmen were unpaid sales associates because his cheap software meant they could sell tons of chips to small businesses. > It really disappoints me when I ask a question and am accused of > being a thief, or too stupid to do a full lab evaluation of something > while standing in someone's garage. I'm used to it on usenet, but still > disappointed. Never happened. You must just be a really annoying person. What I hate is when people insist on telling you about their stuff AND KEEP DOING IT. If you make an offer on something they'll say something like "That's a toaster." Yeah, I kind of knew that. I'm offering you a buck for it. That's what "How a bout a buck?" means. We were buying an oil filter for 50 cents or something like that. As we were paying, the seller's mom was outraged -- "BUT IT'S NEVER BEEN USED!" > Instead of wasting two days of my life googling, it would have been nice > if one of the local knowitalls could have just mentioned that usb was > typically enabled by default on tablets and suggested that I google > "adb shell rm /data/system/gesture.key" and followed one of the many > tutorials on how to do it. Sometimes it's a gray area. We were interested in a yellow Fluke voltmeter (they were relatively new at the time). We asked the wife "How much?" She yelled out to her husband "How much for this thing?" "FIFTY!" "Fifty cents." We gave her two quarters and got the hell out of there. Dark gray, actually. -- Cheers, Bev ==================================== If god had wanted me to bend over he would have sprinkled the floor with diamonds.
