There are certain people who pride themselves on being fiercely 
independent. If given the option to reinvent the wheel, they will 
usually take that path. They believe strongly in self-education and 
think dimly of institutional learning. If you are one of these, you are 
very likely libertarian in your politics and a staunch atheist. You tend 
to be suspicious of authority, sometimes to conspiracy-theory extremism. 
On the other hand, you are more likely to be living alone. You don't 
belong to any large social group, and you would hate to ever have to 
depend on your friends to help you in time of need.

If you fit this description, then you were probably raised that this 
self-reliance is a virtue.

However, MOST people are more social, have come to value being able to 
lean on friends when they need to. Most people declare some religious 
belief in something larger than themselves. Most people like working on 
teams where there is no single member that can do everything required, 
but instead there is an expectation that everyone brings something 
unique to the table. Most people like the idea of passing on knowledge 
from one generation to the next, so that you don't have to start from 
scratch figuring everything out yourself. MOST people believe humans are 
a social species and are not meant to operate alone.
