You completely misinterpret the Schengen regulations: They're about not performing controls at the borders anymore, but these regulations don't lift the necessity to carry valid travel documents when crossing a border! For inhabitants of states which are members of the Schengen treaty, it is sufficient to have an ID card (as for all EU countries and most other European countries), while people from other countries still have to carry the necessary papers (passport e.g.).
