That's why I said "first step", no?

But a possible solution to the texture issue would be an array of tiny 
and sensitive pressure sensors, which may be how our sense of touch 
works.

Temperature would probably not be a thermistor per se, but still likely 
a current measurement, perhaps of idle current in another sensor.
