smr <me@shawnritchie.com> wrote: > This. Fuck PayPal forever, they're shit. It seems like people who bounce checks and try over drawing their credit cards always say that. I've been with them since they were x.com in the 1990's and used the merchant services for the past 10 years for ripco "AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM". They probably aren't the cheapest but they are the easiest to use, just fire up any web browser on any device, log in, enter the card #, expire date and amount, and thats it. No names, no "back of the card" codes. I looked at squaredup just now and didn't drill down very far but make sure if you sign up to go through the actual contract rather than the sales pitch. They might be on the up-and-up, but I don't deal with them. What I'm trying to say is, we did have our own cc processing prior to using paypal with some place in texas. On the surface it seemed reasonable but there were massive hidden fees and charges depending on any particular month. Again, things are different today but back then, no physical swipes each month meant a higher rate. Thus 100% over-the-phone charges without running any card via the swiper meant both the base service fee per transaction went up along with the minimum service fees. They expected one or two physical swipes per week, for what reason, I dunno. There was also some confusing-as-fuck minimums each month with both total number of transactions and total sales volume. I actually kept them for a while after going with paypal but after 6 months the minimum monthly service fee went from $9.95 to $49.99 due to inactivity and they were cancelled. Before you say, "Gee Bruce, you were an idiot for dealing with them", keep in mind that place in texas was where our bank steered us to. Besides, I was aware a year into the deal that it didn't seem right. There was a guy on ripco who did this for a living, worked for some company and sold credit card processing to small businesses and he said in the beginning we were getting ripped off too, until he looked over all the paperwork and 13-14 months of reports from us. There was no alternatives. It pretty much came out the same with all the other services based on how we were running the cards at the time. Again, things change and internet sales are probably doing better than brick and mortar sales and some rules and superstitions are old hat now but paypal gives me a peice of mind. I know exactly what everything costs, how much is getting transferred into the bank account, simple to use and it just works. Whatever few dollars a month I'm losing dealing with them is well worth it. -bruce bje@ripco.com
