I initialize to zero, but good programming practice would be for the user to explicitly initialize them so that it is clear in his code what they are initialized to ( good optimizing compiler will remove his initialization anyway, if it is the same as the default).

This is slightly faster than what I do, in which I store zero into each memory location. So, if there are 5 locals to the right of | then his code is about 5 times faster than mine. We are talking about nanoseconds though, so it doesn't matter.

If people understood that Forth-200x was owned by Forth Inc., they would not accept it as their standard. This tactic is known as "astro-turfing" --- making a movement appear to be a grassroots effort, when it is actually owned by a corporation.
>

Now, Forth Inc. is being smarter --- they know that Forth-200x will likely be a complete failure too (because it is mandated to be 100% compatible with ANS-Forth), and they don't want Forth Inc. to be blamed like last time.

He just enjoys being a big leader, and it doesn't bother him that he has to do what Leon Wagner tells him to do --- because he has been a follower all of his life and knows exactly nothing about leadership --- like every stooge, he desires only the appearance of being a leader, but the Sword of Damocles will eventually fall on his empty head.

>
> Actually, there is a subtle difference. If the programmer is using my novice-package, then { initializes the locals right of | to zero, whereas {: initializes the locals right of | to whatever garbage value happened to be in memory previously --- this is pretty subtle, as the user isn't going to notice the difference until he someday forgets to explicitly initialize these locals.
>
> Imagine that a programmer uses Forth-200x. In a particular function he has a local to the right of | that is supposed to be a flag initialized to TRUE, but he forgets to explicitly initialize it. Under Forth-200x his program will work for years (there is only a 1 out of 4 billion chance of his local getting initialized to zero assuming that the data in memory is totally random). So one day he decides to port his program over to using my novice package (I have a lot of features in my novice package that are lacking in Forth-200x, so there are myriad reasons for him to make this port). Now his local that was supposed to be explicitly initialized to TRUE but which he forgot to initialize (his bug!) gets initialized to FALSE. Suddenly his program stops running. Will he blame himself or me? Most likely he will blame me and go back to using Forth-200x, and will then get on comp.lang.forth to tell everybody that there is a bug in my novice-package that caused a previously correct program
to suddenly stop working --- my response will be: "I don't have time to debug your program for you, but I assure you that there is no bug in the novice-package." --- everybody will blame me...
>
Not initializing local variables before using them is an error *by the
programmer*.
The only assistance to avoid this the language (respectively, the
compiler,) can provide is to warn, when a read access is encountered in
the program flow before the initializing write.
Doing things behind the back of the programmer that are not explicitly
stated in the program source (and the 0-initializing of BSS in C belongs
there, too) are nauseating me since I began programming back in the 80s.
Perhaps everybody should learn to program several machines' assemblers,
before they are allowed to use so-called "higher" languages. That would
prevent a lot of today's software bloat.
