The top-5 entries of Tiobe contain

C, Java, Objective-C, C++, and C#.  3 of them are obvious C derivatives (at 
least they try to make them look like, though I think C# is better described 
as Java derivative).  Java is close enough to this family that you can 
include it in the list, but neither Java nor C# is really C compatible - 
calling unmanaged code or C code through JNI requires wrappers, which need 
to deal with conversion of strings.

However, with the exception of C strings for backward compatibility in C++ 
and Objective C (these are not the native strings of these languages), *all* 
these 4 "C derivatives" in that list have strings which can contain zero 
bytes, and deal with the length of the string in a more sane way.
