I used to be a fan, back when I was a PC owner, of customisation software for Windows such as WindowBlinds and IconPackager. But over the years, as new versions of Windows rolled by, I came to the conclusion that prettiness was secondary to being able to get work done quickly. Eventually, my desire for customisation dwindled down to tweaking the colours of the Aero UI in Windows 7, and the odd custom desktop wallpaper. I've also used PowerPC-based Macs (and various versions of OS X) for work for the best part of a decade prior to getting my own iMac in 2012, and to be honest I was more concerned about having as little clutter as possible between me and my tools (mainly Adobe Illustrator and Apple Mail). The only customisation I've done on my own iMac has been to make the desktop icons larger and more informative, and make the mouse cursor larger. For the dock, I've turned off magnification and changed the window animation from Genie to Scale. One customisation that I can recommend, though, is F.lux ( http://justgetflux.com/ ) which adjusts the screen brightness automatically between daytime and nighttime. My eyes definitely feel better as a result! Alan.
