I reposted this little doodle from the old Slashdot because it's
actually a pretty good question. People are generating lots of digital
data these days and it seems that they would like to figure out ways to
keep it around without relying on some external service.
Of course a person can get a server at a colo facility, or obviously
use a cloud storage provider, but the question is about doing it
yourself.
For me the first thing that springs to mind, is to use Tahoe LAFS
("https://tahoe-lafs.org/trac/tahoe-lafs"). It's designed from the
ground up for just this kind of scenario and works quite well. Other
solutions can be cobbled together with git, rsync, and so on. Even
using FTP and pulling daily mirrors could be sufficient for many
people, but Tahoe has a huge advantage over any of these systems.
His question about other services beyond storage is interesting too,
but I think that a VPN could fulfill most of his needs there and it
would be simple to maintain.
Thanks to Slashdot for inspiring this post, and thanks to Beta for
encouraging me to post the story here!
