I run an OwnCloud server from my house so me and a few friends can share
large files without having to go through a public filesharing site. I've
had a good experience with that, and since you run the server you can do
whatever you like with it. For example, we also run an imageboard for
communication outside of Facebook and such.
If you run a server from a residential connection the bottleneck is
always going to be your upload speed. You could get real hosting if you
don't like that, but you can't beat a spare box in a closet running
OwnCloud for free.
