The Triceps controller (this actually is using a cross compiler) is ~2.8k of program memory and 86 bytes of variable data. This is our showcase, and people are quite excited about it. A few hundred lines of code in Forth can solve a non-trivial problem. The development system is another few hundred lines, and the Verilog code isn't much larger, either. It didn't take long to write, but that doesn't mean it is trivial. To insult the C and Java people: I've just ripped out the Android NativeActivity framework of my Android Gforth. Because it was too buggy, and unfixable, even by subclassing the Java class and trying to override the buggy methods: This doesn't work, because there's constant change in the NativeActivity Java code and the underlying C code, even though all these changes never fix the bugs. And due to poor factoring on the Java side, you can't actually just fix the problematic parts without rewriting everything. Result: My interfacing part went down sigificantly (this will continue, as I'm going to remove some more stuff); of course the biggest lump were the lines deleted to interface with the NativeActivity itself - there's only one function in the native activity library that does something "useful": Convert a Java surface to a NativeWindow (which gets passed to OpenGL). The whole thing that's needed to communicate between Android and Gforth are a few JNI native functions that pass data down a pipe (more than one because Java is typed; the functions otherwise do exactly the same), and a subclass of Runnable that allows the Java Activity to call arbitrary Forth code. That's all, the rest is done using JNI to call Java directly (with two onion layers less - there are still seven layers of onion between the real thing and the Java stuff ;-). The debugging was way smoother than the original NativeActivity debugging: Code that doesn't exist doesn't break. The whole thing is now maintainable. The Google guys working on NativeActivity can't maintain it, as even though they always change a lot of things, it never became stable, and is severely incomplete.
