As you've mentioned it I have to ask. What do you find wrong with the ANS file functions - and what would you use instead? My impression is the ANS functions are more straightforward than C's. Apart from some debatable items, they do what's necessary and can be implemented in environments as hostile as CP/M with ease and efficiency (much to my surprise I might add).
