Yes, I understood that.  My point is that this result is not
very meaningful, since nothing in those later phases depends on
extra spacing between tokens.  So the output of phase 5 could
simply add a space before every token, and that has no effect
on any downstream processing (except of course for making
sure that two adjacent tokens are not merged into one, which
is the point of the exercise).

Without the ability to add extra spaces, phase 5 sometimes cannot
use regular text for its output, because needed token boundaries
might disappear.
