I believe this is a misreading.  If an object with no declared
type is written through a non-character type, "the type of the
lvalue becomes the effective type of the object for that access
and for subsequent accesses that do not modify the stored value."
There is nothing that says that effective type stops being in
force when a value is stored using a character type, that just
isn't the effective type for the store access.  For reads after
the through-character-type store is done, those are subsequent
to the previous non-character-type store, and so have that type
as their effective type.  The Standard doesn't say anything about
"erasing" an effective type.
