Anyway, it turns out that other compiler options were undoing the effects of -O2 (I turn the sanitizer on by default) so I now see what you see. > The details of the standards here is getting beyond me. I fond that surprising. The relevant parts just say that the effective type of object in allocated storage is set by a write operation, and the code only ever reads an object after a write operation has been done using that same type. It all looks fine to me. > When you and > James both think the answer should be 1, and 2 is not allowed, For my part, it's the other way round. I'm, saying that there is no undefined behaviour regardless of what type int64_t actually is. That means that 1 is not permitted and blah3 must return 2. But (despite your kind words below), I'm not much of a language lawyer. I find the effective type rules to be often baffling. It just seems to me that they are quite clear in this particular case. > then I > am far from confident about 2 being allowable I thought you were saying that anything was allowable in the case where int64_t and long long int were not compatible types? > - you are both more > better at "language lawyering" than me. Well, yes, we can all now see that gcc will do this! Being very careful may then something of an understatement, since it seems that programmers must not only take care to stick to the C standard, but must also avoid these other issues. > Maybe it's time to pass this on to the gcc mailing lists, and ask how > they interpret it? That would be interesting. It's obviously a long-standing optimisation, but I don't see on what basis it is being done. -- Ben.
