My experience is entirely with Dell.
I've found that if you have the correct DELL OEM install disk, there's
no place to enter a key because it doesn't need one.
Any disk that is not a DELL disk requires a key and won't accept the key
from the DELL COA sticker.
If you use a keyfinder to detect the key used by your current install,
it probably won't match the key on the COA sticker.

Sometimes, the laptop has the means to build a reinstall CD, but it only 
works once.
There are tutorials on the web telling you how to trick the OS into
making a second restore disk.  This can come in very handy if your
experiments mess up the recovery partition.
