Browse a jQuerified site with no default mobile interface like
GitHub or Reddit on a mobile device. Then disable JavaScript,
and try again. I cut load time in half on an iPod Touch by doing
just that (20s to 10s for GitHub). Furthermore, try interacting
with those pages over an extended period. Watch the device's
battery life drain alarmingly quickly.

The jQuery API is simply too slow for any sane (mobile) user.
Its poor design and mountains of misconceptions enable developers
to write poor, incorrect code in record time.

250kB of mandatory code (obfuscated or not) is a big issue.
That's approaching the Sencha (ExtJS) echelon of insanity.
Tossing that to a mobile device to chew on is lunacy.
Requiring that API on top of another giant wall of text
(jQuery Mobile) is homicidal towards mobile devices.

Keep in mind that obfuscated scripts (gZip et al.) need to
be decoded by the browser (as per HTTP/1.1) just to run.
GZipping isn't free.

Just for the record, pasting the latest "production" version
of jQuery into a text editor and saving it yields a 94kB file,
and not the "32kB" marketed (since the browser is required to
perform the compression). Pull off the GZip robe, and a
disturbingly obese script remains.
