References must be initialized to an object when they are defined. They are always bound to the same object by definition, there are no assertions. You can't write: int & a; You MUST write int p = 42; int & a = p; If you write int & a = 76; I will generate an internal constant variable initialized to 76 and give that address to the reference. But I have problems with references to arrays (when trying to fix the bug you uncovered).
