[...] In C++ the last one is not an attempt to change ``ir'' into a reference to ``j'' (which is, as you said, impossible). Instead, it's an ordinary integer assignment that copies the value of ``j'' into ``ir'' (which is still bound to ``i''). It has the same effect as ``i = j;''.
