Well, actually I think, that 'aether' is not such a good idea, because 
it is not relativistic at all.

My own approach is called 'structured spacetime', where matter is 
'structures' (timelike stable patterns) of/in spacetime.

Spacetime is meant as 'relativistic aether' and could actually be 
derived/created from nothing.

It's kind of tricky, but I have written this nice google doc about it:

It is easy to read and has a lot of illustrations.

The mathematical subset is not yet developed to far, but there exists a 
very good paper from Jonathan Scott about it. Also the papers of W.E. 
Baylis cover the same topic very well.

Another good book about essentially the same idea is 'From Zero to 
Infinity' by Peter Rowlands.
