In BC's school curriculum in the seventies, you needed a pass grade in
a certain number of Grade 11 and Grade 12 classes.  This left room for
a "study" class in Grade 12 if you chose.

I chose to take Biology 11 instead of the study.  I could still
quietly read or do Math homework while half-listening to the teacher,
and the "easy A" would help my GPA.  At that time I could multitask
enough to realize that the teacher was asking me something, "replay"
the last twenty seconds or so to find the question, look up and answer
it correctly.  Then return to my book.

I got an "A/U" in the first report card of that class.  A for
achievement on tests and assignments.  U for unacceptable effort.
I've been proud of that A/U for a long time.
