The house I grew up in had essentially a mud room at each door.  The
front door entered into a small lobby from which the stairs rose to
the second floor.  Because heat rises and there was no central heating
vent in that lobby and the door to the living room was always shut,
the front lobby was always very cold in the winter.

Anyhow, the front door was only for meeting SDA missionaries or other
salesmen.  The main door was at the side of the house.
