FWIW, the degree sign correctly renders in both tin and vi for me.
Because my terminal's character encoding is set to Unicode UTF-8.
There's still a problem with unicode posts and followups that
originate from me. The degree gets munged up because my unicode posts
and followups need some additional work to iron out the bugs.

iconv -f utf-8 -t iso8859-1
