Theoretical physics tries to formulate certain models, concepts and ideas, which describe how nature functions. Such knowledge might eventually be of no practical value. But people like to know such things anyhow and try to enhance knowledge, even if this is not really useful. If possible other worlds are populated is not an appropriate question neither.
