So the assumption is quite plausible, that the universe has a fractal structure. Fractals require complex numbers and so I have tried to introduce them into something like a fundamental model. Goes like this: I take complex numbers and compare the complex plane with a Minkowski Diagram. Since we need volume, I 'pump the complex plane up' (kind of), by multiplying the plane with three. This gives a mathematical construct called 'complex-four-vectors' (aka 'bi-quaternions'). Spacetime could be understood as 'quaternion-field' and matter as 'internal structure' (of spacetime). It is a little tricky, but quite plausible. I have also written a longish text about the idea.
