I disable overcommit on all my Linux app servers _and_ I never add swap.

But I don't run Linux on the desktop. Popular desktop toolkits like glib and
Gtk+ use malloc wrappers that simply abort the process on malloc failure.
glib is used by some server software, but I avoid any server software
that uses glib.

Windows doesn't have overcommit and works just fine. See
