Gravitational Waves Could Split Open Black Holes

Large black holes are unstable if gravitational
waves have a say in the matter.

The problem with large black holes that have
been around for a long time, is that nearly
all the material inside it could end up near
the event horizon trapped as light in the
firewall.

But this light still has mass and while it can
skirt about rapidly, it can end up clumping.
In very large black holes, this clumping
can be re-enforced with gravitational waves
to accompany the clumping. The different
regions of the black hole are not symmetric
and properly connected due to distances once the clumping
and gravitational waves begin to act and eventually
the gravitational waves and the clumping would amplify
until the whole structure tears itself apart.

It would be difficult for smaller black holes to
do this because different regions remain connected
until the gravitational waves are of such
a high frequency that it must be approaching
frequencies that of light itself before the
damage can be done. 

For larger black holes, the frequencies get
lower and lower until it is so low that it is
inevitable.
